midnight handles multiple resource types in the same consensus round. night, dust, and private state transitions all need to reach finality together. each has different properties - night is transferable, dust is non-transferable and address-bound, private state is local and proven through ZK. and i wonder that its same as ZKP?
bundling them into a single consensus mechanism means the protocol has to satisfy the validity requirements of all three simultaneously rather than sequentially.
what that gets right is atomicity. a transaction that touches multiple resource types either finalises completely or not at all. no partial settlement. no state where dust was consumed but the corresponding private state transition failed.
what i cant resolve is whether consensus complexity scales cleanly as more resource types or more ZK proof types are added to the protocol over time.

bhutan launched its national digital identity system on Hyperledger Indy. then migrated to POLYGON in 2024. then targeted ETHEREUM as the next destination with a Q1 2026 goal. three platforms in roughly two years. for a system that holds the national identity records of 750,000 people. the whitepaper frames this as a pragmatic approach to platform selection - balancing performance, decentralization, and security requirements as they evolved. that framing is fair as far as it goes. Hyperledger Indy was purpose-built for self-sovereign identity but had real limitations around scalability and ecosystem connectivity Polygon offered broader developer tooling and faster transaction throughput Ethereum offers deeper decentralization and a larger validator set. what the framing doesnt fully address is what a platform migration means at the identity layer specifically. this isnt migrating a payments database or a content platform. these are the cryptographic anchors that verifiers use to confirm that an identity credential was issued by a legitimate government authority. the trust registry - the on-chain record of which DIDs belong to which authorized issuers - has to move with the platform every integration that any government agency bank or service provider built against the Indy trust registry had to be rebuilt against Polygon and now potentially rebuilt again against Ethereum. the design gets the underlying principle right the whitepaper explicitly commits to W3C Verifiable Credentials and W3C DIDs as the standards layer - which means the credential format held by citizens in their wallets is theoretically portable across platforms. a credential issued under Indy and conforming to W3C VC 2.0 should be presentable against a trust registry that migrated to Polygon, provided the issuer DID was properly ported and remains resolvable. what i kept working through is the gap between theoretically portable and operationally confirmed. standards compliance is a necessary condition for migration, not a sufficient one. every issuer DID needs to be re-anchored on the new chain. every verifier integration needs to resolve against the new registry. every revocation list needs to remain accessible the citizen wallet holding credentials issued before the migration is only as portable as the completeness of the migration execution. three platform migrations in two years on a live national identity system is either exactly the kind of pragmatic iteration that building genuinely new sovereign infrastructure requires, or a signal that the architectural foundation hasnt stabilized under a system that 750,000 people now depend on.

something i was reading through last night when i was looking for a proper entry point in XAG and ETH and suddenly my mind runs to whitepaper of Sign in the TokenTable spec caught me off guard honestly 😂 the duplicate prevention mechanic is more interesting than it sounds on paper. when a government runs a benefits distribution, the obvious attack surface is the same person claiming twice under different wallet addresses. TokenTable closes that gap by linking distributions to verified identity attestations rather than wallet addresses the wallet is just the delivery endpoint the identity is the eligibility gate
what that means technically is that a recipient cant route around a distribution limit by generating a new wallet. the eligibility check runs against the identity layer, not the address layer. one verified identity, one claim, regardless of how many addresses that identity controls.
the part i keep turning over is what happens at the identity layer boundary. duplicate prevention is only as strong as the identity deduplication underneath it. if two verified identity records exist for the same person - through an enrollment error, a name change, or a legacy system migration gap - the protocol has no way to know
