They arrive with a clean story, a simple promise, a vocabulary designed to remove all resistance. You know exactly how to repeat the pitch after five minutes, which is often a sign that the thing itself has already been flattened into marketing. Crypto has produced an endless supply of these. The language gets smoother every cycle. The substance rarely does.

Sign Protocol does not feel like that to me.

Not because it is mysterious in some clever way. More because the closer you get to what it is actually trying to do, the less useful the usual market language becomes. It sits near a set of problems people love to mention and hate to sit with for long: trust between systems, credibility of records, legitimacy of claims, and the ugly work of proving something across environments that do not naturally trust each other.

That is not a glamorous place to build.

So I do not look at Sign and think, this is elegant.

I look at it and think, this is heading toward the kind of mess that decides whether infrastructure has a future or just a good deck.

That is not criticism for the sake of it. It is the standard that matters here. If the protocol is meant to carry claims that influence real decisions, then the relevant question is not whether the system can produce attestations. Of course it can. The relevant question is whether those attestations will be treated as serious enough to act on when the stakes rise, the participants multiply, and institutional comfort disappears.

That is a much harsher test than most crypto discourse allows.

And it is also why I do not find the token chatter very useful around something like this. Price can create temporary attention, but it tells you almost nothing about whether a trust layer will survive contact with institutions that are slow, territorial, and allergic to ambiguity. If anything, market excitement often distracts from the more important question: can this kind of system reduce friction without simply relocating it somewhere harder to see?

I do not know yet. That is the honest answer.

But I do think Sign seems more aware than most projects of where the real pressure sits. Not beyond it. Not above it. Just closer to it. And that matters. Awareness is not a solution, but lack of awareness is usually fatal. Especially in this category.

That is why the project does not leave me with conviction so much as attention. And attention, honestly, is harder to earn. Conviction is cheap in this industry. People hand it out before the difficult part even starts.
