When a person finally looked at the file, the actual decision took maybe forty-five minutes. In other words, the process was the problem. That came back to me this week while reading about how Sign is using ZK passport proofs for e-Visa processing. The problem they are trying to solve is real. In visa systems, a huge amount of the delay is administrative rather than substantive. And on that level, the design is genuinely smart. But there is also a gap in the middle of it that I think deserves more attention than it is getting. What they get right is the basic protocol idea. Sign’s e-Visa setup works with ICAO 9303-compliant ePassports, which are the modern machine-readable passports used around the world. These passports include a chip that stores digitally signed data such as the holder’s name, nationality, date of birth, passport number, expiry date, and biometrics. Because that chip is signed by the issuing country’s authority, the data can be verified cryptographically without needing to contact the government in real time. The ZK layer takes this a step further. Instead of exposing the full passport data to the processing system, an applicant can prove only the facts that matter, such as being from an approved nationality, being above a certain age, or holding a passport that is still valid. The system sees proof that the required conditions are true, not the underlying personal data. Then smart contracts automate the workflow. If an application satisfies the ZK checks, it can move forward automatically. Approvals, status changes, and visa issuance can happen without manual handling for cases that fit the rules. A ZK proof built on that passport can still pass. Cryptographic correctness is not the same thing as factual truth.
