I keep circling back to this quiet feeling that something like SIGN sounds almost too neat. Like it fits perfectly into the story we like to tell ourselves about technology that things keep getting cleaner, more efficient, more trustworthy if we just build the right system. And yeah, a shared way to verify credentials across the world does sound useful. It solves real problems. But there’s also a kind of simplicity in that idea that doesn’t quite match how people actually live.
Because not everything about a person is meant to be pinned down and verified. Some things are messy, evolving, or just… personal. The assumption here seems to be that if we can verify more, we probably should. But I’m not sure that holds up in real life. There’s a difference between reducing fraud and slowly creating an environment where being unverified starts to feel like a liability.
And then there’s that subtle shift from choice to pressure. Even if the system says, “you’re in control, you decide what to share,” incentives have a way of changing that. If access to opportunities, money, or trust depends on what you’re willing to verify, it stops feeling like a free choice. People adapt. They always do. And sometimes that means revealing more than they’re comfortable with, just to keep up.
I also can’t help but wonder who gets to define what actually counts as a valid credential in the first place. Because even in something decentralized, those decisions don’t magically disappear. Someone sets the standards. And once those standards exist, they start shaping behavior. People begin to mold themselves around what the system recognizes, even if it leaves parts of them out.
There’s a weird tension here too between making things more accountable and quietly increasing control. On one hand, having verifiable records could make systems fairer. On the other hand, it creates a kind of permanent visibility that’s hard to walk back. Not everything needs to be traceable forever. Sometimes trust comes from context, from human judgment, from the ability to let things go.
The token side of it makes things even more complicated. Incentives sound great in theory, but they don’t just reward behavior they influence it. If people are earning based on what can be verified, they’ll naturally start optimizing for that. And when that happens, the system stops just reflecting reality and starts shaping it in ways that aren’t always obvious.
And honestly, the biggest question for me is whether any of this plugs into the real world as smoothly as it sounds. Existing systems aren’t just technical they’re tied to institutions, power, habits. Universities, employers, governments… they don’t move quickly, and they don’t give up control easily. So even if SIGN works perfectly on a technical level, adoption might be slower, messier, and more uneven than expected.
On a human level, there’s something a little uneasy about turning identity into something that can be packaged and verified anywhere. It makes things easier to read, sure. But it can also make people feel… reduced. Like everything important about them needs to fit into a format that a system understands.
I don’t think the idea is wrong. It’s actually kind of inevitable that we’d move in this direction in some form. But I think it leans a bit too heavily on the belief that trust is something you can fully build through verification. In reality, trust is softer than that. It leaves room for uncertainty, for context, for things that don’t quite fit into clean categories.
Maybe SIGN ends up being really useful in specific situations. Probably it will. But the harder question the one that doesn’t get talked about as much is where it shouldn’t be used. And that’s not really a technical decision. It’s a human one.
