I’ve been around long enough to remember when “trustless” was the word everyone leaned on. It sounded clean. Final. As if removing intermediaries would somehow remove doubt itself. But over time, you realize doubt doesn’t disappear—it just moves. It finds new places to live.

Lately I’ve been thinking about systems like SIGN—this idea of building a global layer for credential verification and token distribution. On paper, it makes sense. We’ve always had credentials: degrees, work history, reputation, proof of participation. What’s new is the attempt to formalize them into something portable, programmable, and—this is the important part—continuously verifiable.

But the longer you watch these systems evolve, the less they look like machines that create trust, and more like environments where trust gets… tested.

Because credentials are not static things. They age. They get questioned. The person or institution that issued them changes, sometimes subtly, sometimes all at once. A respected authority today can become irrelevant—or even distrusted—tomorrow. And when that happens, the credential doesn’t just sit there unchanged. It carries that erosion with it.

That’s where things get interesting.

A system like SIGN isn’t just storing attestations. It’s implicitly making a claim: that trust can be tracked over time, that credibility can be revisited, not just granted once and forgotten. That sounds reasonable. But it also opens a door most people don’t think about—the system has to survive disagreement.

What happens when two credible issuers contradict each other?

What happens when a widely trusted issuer starts behaving badly?

What happens when incentives shift and people begin issuing credentials not because they’re true, but because it benefits them?

You start to see the cracks there.

Token distribution adds another layer. It always does. The moment rewards enter the picture, behavior changes. People optimize. They don’t necessarily lie outright—not at first—but they find edges. They find ways to qualify, to appear eligible, to signal just enough credibility to pass whatever threshold exists.

And over time, those thresholds tend to get gamed.

We’ve seen this pattern before. Airdrops, reputation systems, DAO voting—every system that tries to quantify participation eventually attracts participants who are very good at looking like participants. It’s not even malicious in a dramatic sense. It’s just adaptation. Incentives shape behavior more reliably than ideology ever will.

So when a protocol ties credentials to token flows, it’s not just verifying identity or contribution. It’s creating a market around credibility itself.

That’s a delicate thing.

Because now credentials aren’t just reflections of reality—they become tools. Assets, even. Something you accumulate, refine, present strategically. And once that happens, you can’t fully trust what you’re looking at anymore. Not blindly, at least.

But here’s where I think SIGN—or systems like it—are trying to take a different path, whether intentionally or not.

Instead of pretending that trust can be perfectly encoded, they allow it to remain… unsettled.

A credential isn’t the final word. It’s a claim. One that can be revisited. Challenged. Contextualized. Maybe even downgraded in relevance over time. That’s closer to how trust actually works in the real world. It’s not binary. It’s not permanent. It’s something we constantly renegotiate.

If the system leans into that—if it accepts that credentials are living things, not fixed truths—then it becomes less about proving something once, and more about maintaining credibility over time.

But that’s also harder. Much harder.

Because now you’re not building a database. You’re building a system that has to handle decay, disagreement, and manipulation without collapsing into noise. You need mechanisms for reassessment, without opening the door to endless disputes. You need incentives that reward honesty, but don’t turn honesty into something performative.

And honestly, I don’t know if that balance is achievable.

There’s also the question of who gets to matter. Not all issuers are equal, and they never will be. Some voices carry more weight. Some credentials will always be seen as more “real” than others. Even in a decentralized system, hierarchies tend to re-emerge. Reputation clusters. Influence concentrates.

So the idea of a global credential layer sounds neutral, but in practice, it’s shaped by power dynamics—just quieter ones.

Still, I find myself paying attention.

Not because I think systems like SIGN will solve trust. I don’t think that’s possible. Trust isn’t something you eliminate uncertainty from. It’s something you navigate despite uncertainty.

What these systems might do—if they’re careful—is make that navigation more transparent.

Let people see where trust comes from. How it changes. Where it breaks.

And maybe that’s enough.

Or maybe it just creates a more complex illusion of certainty. A cleaner interface over the same old problems.

I’m not convinced either way yet.

But I’ve stopped looking for systems that promise perfect trust. At this point, I’m more interested in the ones that acknowledge how fragile it is—and what happens when it starts to slip.
