The first transaction was in 2009, valued at only 10 BTC.
He was one of the early supporters of the idea and believed in Bitcoin before the world knew about it.

He passed away in 2014 after a battle with illness,
but his name is still associated with the beginning of Bitcoin and its inception, and some people believe that he is Satoshi himself, while others doubt the circumstances of his death.
