Senator Elizabeth Warren sent a letter to Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick requesting the submission of documents related to **Bitmain Technologies Ltd.**, a Beijing-based Bitcoin (BTC) mining equipment manufacturer. Bitmain is under federal investigation due to potential national security risks.

This investigation was conducted following the purchase of mining equipment worth $314 million by American Bitcoin, a mining company supported by President Donald Trump's sons.

Warren demanded disclosure of communications between Bitmain, the Trump family, and the Department of Commerce, as well as measures taken to "insulate" national security-related decisions from companies connected to the Trump family.

The letter mentions the ongoing 'Operation Red Sunset' by the Department of Homeland Security. This investigation reviews whether Bitmain equipment could be remotely controlled for espionage or used to disrupt the U.S. power grid.

Federal investigation, focused review of remote control risks

Bloomberg reported that Operation Red Sunset began during the Biden administration in November 2025, and investigators tested Bitmain equipment at U.S. ports.

The Senate Intelligence Committee's report in July 2025 concluded that Bitmain devices could be "compelled to submit data by the Chinese government (PRC) under China's National Security Law."

In May 2024, federal review results led to an order to divest interests related to foreign equipment at mining facilities near Francis E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming, citing "significant national security concerns." The current progress of Operation Red Sunset remains unclear.

Trump family mining business, use of Bitmain equipment

American Bitcoin agreed to purchase 16,000 Bitmain miners for $314 million through a contract in August 2025, according to SEC disclosures, paying with Bitcoin as collateral instead of cash. The company plans to operate 76,000 units across the U.S. and Canada.

An American Bitcoin spokesperson told Bloomberg that the company found no vulnerabilities allowing remote access as a result of security testing. Bitmain stated that it "strictly complies with U.S. law" and claimed to have no knowledge of Operation Red Sunset.

The Department of Commerce did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Democratic Party currently holds a minority status in the Senate, so it cannot compel an official response.
