US-Iran Conflict: Khark Island Becomes the Focus

The US-Iran conflict continues to escalate, with the Iranian oil export hub Khark Island becoming a strategic focal point. The island accounts for approximately 90% of Iran's crude oil exports, located about 24 kilometers off the Iranian coast.

On March 13, the US military launched airstrikes on Khark Island, destroying military targets on the island while deliberately preserving oil infrastructure. Trump threatened that if Iran continued to interfere with the Strait of Hormuz, the oil facilities on the island would be attacked. On March 21, Trump issued a 48-hour ultimatum, demanding Iran open the Strait of Hormuz, and subsequently delayed military action citing "successful negotiations."

In terms of military deployment, the US has sent approximately 5,000 Marine Corps personnel and about 2,000-3,000 from the 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East, increasing ground forces by up to 10,000. The US is considering seizing Khark Island to pressure Iran, but Iran has strengthened defenses on the island, laying mines and deploying anti-aircraft missiles.

Iran denies negotiating with the US, stating it only studies US information through a third party. Iran warned that if energy facilities are attacked, it will strike all oil companies cooperating with the US in the region and announced it is prepared to block the Strait of Hormuz. Iran claims to have organized over 1 million people to prepare for ground combat.

The international community has reacted strongly. Iraq has explicitly prohibited the US military from using its bases to attack Iran; Russia is providing military equipment and intelligence support to Iran; China diplomatically opposes US unilateral military action. Saudi Arabia is concerned about the spread of conflict and is quietly pressuring the US.

Analysts believe Trump's actions aim to create a campaign boost for elections and shift attention from domestic economic difficulties, while also attempting to control global oil prices. However, experts warn that the proximity of Khark Island to Iranian territory means that a US landing would face missile, drone, and artillery strikes, posing extreme risks.
