Without landing even once, the bar-tailed godwit completed an extraordinary journey of about 8,425 miles (13,560 km) from Alaska to Tasmania in just 11 days. Throughout this nonstop flight, the bird fed on tiny insects while flying. Even more astonishing, during the journey one part of its brain sleeps while the other remains awake, allowing it to continue flying without rest.
