On October 24, 2025, during a national conference on digital currencies and crypto assets, the central bank of Kyrgyzstan signed a protocol agreement for the Sign Protocol, to launch a central bank digital currency (CBDC) named Digital SOM, which will directly serve the country's population of 7.2 million people.
The new born currency is linked to the local cryptocurrency KGST.
This step aims to enhance financial infrastructure and digital identity in Kyrgyzstan.
The main objectives of the agreement:
- Digital financial sovereignty and enabling Kyrgyzstan to manage its digital currency independently.
2- Citizen services.
3- Transparency and security and using digital proof technologies to ensure privacy with compliance.
4- Regional integration and enhancing cross-border payments and linking the local economy to global markets.
