German President Labels US-Israeli Campaign in Iran a “Breach of International Law”
In a significant departure from traditional diplomatic caution, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has formally characterized the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran as a "breach of international law." Speaking at the 75th anniversary of the German foreign ministry, Steinmeier described the conflict as a "politically disastrous mistake" and an "avoidable, unnecessary war."
The President’s remarks highlight a growing "deep rift" between Germany and the United States, noting that trust in American power politics has been severely diminished since the start of the second Trump administration in January 2025. Steinmeier argued that the justification of an "imminent attack" on the US does not hold water, urging Germany to remain pragmatic without compromising its core principles or aligning with a worldview that disregards established international rules.
While Chancellor Friedrich Merz has maintained a more critical stance toward Iran’s leadership, he has also noted that Germany would have advised against the war had it been consulted. As the conflict continues to impact global energy prices and international relations, Germany finds itself navigating a complex path between its historical alliances and its commitment to international legal standards.
