I am starting to feel tired of how the market talks about 'security' and 'privacy'.

After a few cycles, these words almost lose their meaning. Every project talks about high security, maximum privacy, zero-knowledge, compliance-ready... but when looking deeper, most are just layers of abstraction piled on top of each other, while the root issues – who controls what, who can check, and where trust is placed – remain as vague as ever.

There is a very familiar pattern:
a beautiful whitepaper, a system claiming 'trustless', followed by a series of implicit assumptions about trusted parties that no one really wants to mention.

I have seen too many things like this to still be easily convinced.

So when reading the security & privacy section of @SignOfficial , my first reaction was not excitement, but suspicion: could this just be another way of expressing the same old story?


The point that makes me pause a little longer is not the technology, but how they define the problem.

$SIGN does not start from 'how to make everything private' or 'how to make everything transparent', but rather proposes a somewhat uncomfortable yet more practical principle:
'private to the public, auditable to lawful authorities.'

This sentence, if looked closely, is almost a concession of part of the original ideals of crypto.

It acknowledges that in national-scale systems, privacy cannot be absolute, and transparency cannot be default. Instead, the issue becomes: who has the right to see what, under what conditions.

This is no longer a purely technical problem. It is a power issue.


The part that I find most thought-provoking lies in how they handle data.

Instead of trying to put everything on-chain (a mistake many projects still repeat), S.I.G.N. goes in the opposite direction:
PII is by default off-chain, while on-chain only retains 'proof/anchor' such as hash, attestation ID, or reference.

This may seem obvious, but in reality, it is not as common as it should be.

Many blockchain systems are still trying to turn the chain into a data storage place, rather than a verification layer. And in doing so, they inadvertently create an insurmountable conflict: the more complete the data, the less private it is, while the more private it is, the harder it is to audit.

S.I.G.N. does not try to resolve this contradiction by 'optimizing', but by separating it:
data in one place, evidence in another.

That is an architectural choice, not a feature.


But it is precisely here that another issue arises.

If data is off-chain, then trust returns to traditional systems: database, operator, issuing organization.

That is, even with additional cryptographic proof, you still need to believe that:

  • raw data is not altered before hashing

  • storage systems are not compromised

  • entities with audit rights actually act correctly

In other words, 'trust' does not disappear. It is just redistributed.

S.I.G.N. seems to recognize this, so they emphasize quite a bit on auditability: the ability to reconstruct 'who did what, when, and why'.

But auditability itself is also a double-edged sword.

You can audit, but:

  • who is authorized to audit?

  • are audit logs tampered with?

  • is access to audit abused?

They mention RBAC, least-privilege, multi-party approval...
but these are familiar mechanisms in enterprise systems.

It addresses the issue at the 'process' level, not at the 'absolute trust' level.


Another point I find interesting is how they approach privacy.

It's not about 'hiding everything', but 'only revealing what is necessary' – selective disclosure, minimal disclosure, unlinkability.

This sounds similar to the direction of Verifiable Credentials and DID – and in fact, they rely quite a bit on W3C standards.

But here is a question that I always come back to:

whether users truly control their own data, or are just using a system where the ultimate control still lies with issuers and regulators?

Selective disclosure allows you not to reveal your birth date, only proving 'over 18 years old'.
But who defines that rule? Who verifies that credential is valid?

In a national system, the answer is almost certainly not 'user'.


The payment privacy part also clearly shows this compromise.

They talk about dual-rail:

  • public rail for transparency

  • private rail (CBDC) for privacy

Sounds reasonable. But in reality, this raises a bigger question:

who decides when a transaction is 'public' or 'private'?

And if a private rail exists, what does that level of 'private' mean?

They mention tiers like wholesale vs retail, and even potentially using ZK.
But in the context of CBDC, privacy is often not a guarantee, but a policy.

And policies can change.


If looked at from a broader perspective, I think S.I.G.N. is not really solving the 'blockchain security' problem.

They are trying to solve a much harder problem:

how to build a system that:

  • private enough for citizens to accept

  • transparent enough for the government to control

  • auditable enough for regulators to trust

  • standardized enough for many parties to coordinate

This is a coordination problem, not just a cryptography one.

And that is also why they talk more about data classification, access control, audit artifacts... than TPS or gas fees.


However, precisely because the scope is too large, the risks are not small.

A few points I still find unclear:

  • How much does this system depend on governance?

  • If an issuer is compromised, how widespread are the consequences?

  • Are the 'proofs' really strong enough to replace trust in organizations?

  • And most importantly: who controls the trust registry?

Their threat model mentions issuer compromise, sybil, bridge abuse...
But mitigation still returns to the familiar: key custody, monitoring, revocation.

These things work well in theory, but in practice, failures often come from unexpected places.


After all, my feeling about S.I.G.N. is not 'this is the future', but:

this is a serious effort to confront the limits that most other projects try to avoid.

They do not try to turn blockchain into a perfect system.
They accept that there will always be trade-offs between privacy, audit, and control.

That makes it more practical.
But also makes it harder to evaluate.

Because ultimately, the question is no longer:
'Is this technology good?'

But rather:
are we willing to accept the way it reallocates trust and power?
