Hello everyone, the recent hot topic in the circle, besides the ups and downs of the market, that I am personally most curious about is the Midnight Network. Especially seeing top venture capital like Sequoia Capital placing heavy bets, my curiosity has been completely piqued—what exactly do they see in the future that I haven’t recognized?
I have been immersed in Crypto for a few years, experiencing DeFi Summer, playing with NFTs, and witnessing the rise and fall of many 'next Ethereums.' But an old problem is becoming increasingly painful: Is our industry a bit too 'overly transparent'? Every transaction you make, every on-chain interaction, is laid bare in front of the block explorer. It may seem inconsequential on a regular day, but when you genuinely want to use blockchain for something serious, like managing company finances, initiating a supply chain project, or simply not wanting everyone to know your asset portfolio, this transparency becomes a fatal shackle.
This is where I think the Midnight Network truly scratches the itch. It doesn't bother you with those empty concepts; it addresses the core pain point: 'programmable privacy.'
What does it mean? Let me give an analogy that might not be perfect but is easy to understand. Today's blockchain is like a conference room with glass walls on all sides, where everyone inside can hear every word spoken clearly from outside. Midnight, on the other hand, gives you a smart, customizable conference room. You can set the rules yourself: which wall is transparent (publicly accessible), which wall is frosted (showing partial information only to partners), and which wall is solid (completely confidential). Plus, you don't need to be an architectural expert; with common programming languages like TypeScript, you can design this conference room.
This is so cool! It means that for the first time, blockchain has the potential to truly carry those 'sensitive' yet highly valuable traditional businesses. I've seen some of their technical documents and developer interviews, and their thinking is very clear: they are not trying to create another anonymous mixer but rather build an infrastructure that makes 'privacy' a feature module that developers can easily call upon.
Think about it: if a game developer wants to protect core asset data and player identities, they can do it; if a medical research institution wants to use blockchain to share anonymized data for AI training while meeting strict compliance requirements like GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), it can potentially achieve that; and in the future, even when you and I engage in lending or trading on the blockchain, we will be able to selectively hide our positions and strategies to avoid being targeted by 'scientists.' This is about giving the choice back to the user, rather than just being 'fully transparent' or 'fully anonymous' in a black-and-white manner.
I know the privacy track has been lukewarm; many projects are either too difficult to use or sacrifice decentralization. But behind Midnight is the IOG (the development company of Cardano) team, which has a long history of building robust underlying protocols. This makes me feel that they are not just here to hype a concept and leave. They are currently building a developer ecosystem and promoting a testnet, and every step they take seems solid, not just to follow trends.
So, why am I invested in this? Because I believe that if Crypto wants to truly break out and attract trillions of traditional capital and mainstream users, compliant and user-friendly privacy is not optional; it is essential. Midnight Network is targeting this crucial and challenging stronghold.
Sequoia's bet might just be because they see its potential as an 'infrastructure monster'—what it's building may not be the flashiest building, but rather the underground pipeline and privacy walls that determine whether the entire new district can thrive. I can't help but follow their rhythm and delve deeper into this project. This time, I expect not just a token's price increase but a future network that is 'both open and protective,' truly allowing us to create everything with peace of mind, emerging from a place called 'midnight' into dawn.
