30 March – St. John Climacus (John of the Ladder)

Abbot & Confessor

Born c. 579 in Syria or Palestine, became monk at Mount Sinai around age 16. Lived as hermit for 40 years, then elected abbot of the monastery at Sinai. Author of the famous *Ladder of Divine Ascent* (Klimax in Greek), a 30-step spiritual treatise on the path from renunciation of the world to perfect love, still read in monasteries during Great Lent. Known for profound humility, tears of repentance, and guidance of souls. Died c. 649 at age 80; patron of ascetics, penitents, and those seeking spiritual progress.

“Ascend, brothers, ascend eagerly. Let your hearts be lifted up.”

This feast, falling near the end of Lent in many calendars, reminds us that the spiritual life is a steady climb — step by step, through detachment, obedience, and love — toward union with God.

Lord Jesus, through the intercession of St. John Climacus, grant us the grace to climb the ladder of virtue with perseverance, humility, and longing for You.
