27 March – St. Rupert of Salzburg
Bishop & Confessor
Born c. 660 in Worms (or Aquitaine), noble Frankish family. Became monk, then bishop-missionary to Bavaria and Austria at the request of Duke Theodo of Bavaria. Founded the monastery of St. Peter in Salzburg (c. 696) and rebuilt the cathedral; evangelized the region, converted many pagans, and promoted salt mining (hence patron of salt miners). Known for miracles, gentle preaching, and care for the poor. Died c. 710; relics in Salzburg Cathedral; patron of Salzburg, salt miners, and against rheumatism.
“Bring light to those in darkness.”
A model apostolic bishop: using both spiritual authority and practical works (like salt economy) to build up the Church in new lands.
Lord Jesus, through the intercession of St. Rupert, grant missionaries and bishops zeal to evangelize distant places with charity, patience, and fruitfulness.
