25 March – The Annunciation of the Lord

Solemnity

The Archangel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that she will conceive and bear the Son of God (Lk 1:26–38). “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to your word.” This mystery marks the Incarnation: the eternal Word becomes flesh in Mary’s womb. Celebrated exactly nine months before Christmas (December 25), it is one of the most ancient and joyful feasts, falling in Lent but taking precedence as a Solemnity with Gloria and Creed.

In many traditions, March 25 was also anciently held as the date of Creation and of Christ’s Crucifixion — uniting beginning, Incarnation, and redemption in one symbolic day.

“Mary’s yes opens the door of the world to God.”

This solemnity invites us to imitate Mary’s fiat: total surrender to God’s will, even amid mystery or trial.

Lord Jesus, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the Annunciation, grant us the grace of humble obedience and joyful acceptance of Your holy will.
