In the time of Robin Hood (and in the Middle Ages in general), coins with clipped edges were simply called "clipped" (from the English "clipped coins").

Why did this happen?
In that era, the value of a coin was directly related to the weight of precious metal (usually silver) it contained. Counterfeiters used scissors or files to trim tiny strips of metal from the edges of the coin.

Benefit: The cut-off pieces were collected and melted down into ingots or new coins.
