Hey Crypto Friends! I am sharing general knowledge for us together. As of now (March 2026), there is only one country that officially accepts Bitcoin as legal tender, which is El Salvador.

El Salvador became the first country in the world to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender in September 2021 through the Bitcoin Law. Although there were policy changes in 2025 (after pressure from the IMF), its status remains recognized as a valid payment method voluntarily in the private sector, and the government continues to hold Bitcoin reserves. However, the mandatory acceptance by businesses has been removed, but Bitcoin is still considered an official/legal form of payment.

For the Central African Republic, this country adopted Bitcoin as legal tender in April 2022 (becoming the second country), but this decision was revoked/canceled by the parliament in 2023 due to various reasons including regional pressure, implementation issues, and court rulings. Its status is no longer valid as legal tender.

No other country has officially made Bitcoin legal tender or a national official payment method. Many countries (such as Japan, Switzerland, Germany, Singapore, etc.) allow the use of Bitcoin for commercial payments or businesses to accept crypto as a payment option, but it is not an "official" status as legal tender (required to be accepted like fiat currency).
So, the short answer is: 1 country (El Salvador). There is no indication of significant changes until early 2026 based on the latest data.
