The Central Bank of the Russian Federation challenges the indefinite freezing of assets in the EU court

The Central Bank of the Russian Federation has moved to a direct legal attack in the jurisdiction of the European Union.

On February 27, 2026, the regulator filed a lawsuit with the General Court of the EU in Luxembourg, demanding the annulment of the EU Council Regulation of December 12, 2025. This document effectively introduced an indefinite freeze on Russian state assets amounting to approximately €210 billion to guarantee payments to Ukraine and provide a "reparative loan".

Representatives of the Central Bank claim that the EU's decision violates the principle of sovereign immunity and international law. Earlier, Brussels canceled the requirement to review sanctions every six months, which deprived countries like Hungary of the ability to veto the freeze.

Lawyers note that this lawsuit is an attempt to block the use of profits from assets to finance military needs in Ukraine in 2026–2027.

The European Commission has already called Moscow's actions "speculative" and assured that the European financial system is fully protected from the legal consequences of these claims.
