CZ of Binance Expresses Concerns Over France’s Direction
Binance’s Former CEO CZ Says France Is in Decline
Changpeng Zhao, the former CEO of cryptocurrency exchange Binance, recently made a grim assessment of France, stating that the European Union’s second-largest economy has been on the decline in recent years.
Zhao pointed to a series of crypto-related kidnappings that have taken place in France, along with the controversial detention of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov, which occurred last August.
Despite these concerns, Zhao remains hopeful that France, a key player in the EU, will eventually see improvement.
It’s also important to mention that France initiated an investigation into Binance in early 2025, as reported by Reuters.
Rise in Crypto-Targeted Crimes
France has attracted significant media attention within the crypto world this year due to a surge in kidnapping incidents tied to cryptocurrency.
In January, David Balland, co-founder of Ledger, was abducted from his residence in central France. His captors demanded a ransom of €10 million. During the ordeal, one of his fingers was severed before elite French forces managed to rescue him.
In May, the father of a wealthy crypto investor was kidnapped and later rescued. That same month, the daughter of Paymium CEO Pierre Noizat was attacked by masked men while with her child. The attackers tried but failed to shove her into a van.
Around 25 individuals involved in the disturbing kidnapping cases have been prosecuted by French authorities. New security protocols designed for crypto industry professionals have since been rolled out.
Notre-Dame’s Towers Reopen
Zhao’s remarks about France followed the reopening of the iconic Notre-Dame cathedral towers. It took five years to rebuild them after the major 2019 blaze.
CZ noted that Binance contributed to the restoration early on, saying it’s good to see the monument reopen.
“Hopefully, it helps France become safer—even in a small way,” CZ said.
