Binance turns eight; 280M users, global growth
Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume and users, is celebrating its eighth anniversary, marking a journey from a modest crypto-to-crypto startup in 2017 to a dominant force in digital finance.

The exchange now boasts more than 280 million registered users across 100+ countries and has processed over $125 trillion in trading volume, surpassing the 2024 global GDP.

Binance, which was launched on July 14, 2017, is now celebrating its 8th anniversary. Over the years, it has grown stronger through ups and downs, and today it serves over 280 million users from more than 100 countries as one of the largest crypto exchanges.

🏴‍☠️ What Happened?
On February 21, 2025, the crypto exchange Bybit was hacked.
Hackers stole about $1.4–$1.5 billion, the biggest crypto heist ever.
Most of the stolen money was:
401,000+ Ethereum (ETH)
Tokens like stETH and mETH
The funds were taken from a cold wallet during a normal transfer.
🧠 How Did the Hack Work?
This was not a simple password hack.
Hackers infected a developer’s computer
They secretly added bad code to Safe Wallet (the wallet Bybit used)
Bybit’s top staff approved a transaction, thinking it was safe
The approval actually gave hackers full control of the wallet
This is called a supply chain attack + social engineering
👉 The system looked normal, but it wasn’t.
🕵️ Who Did It?
The FBI
Blockchain investigators like Chainalysis and TRM Labs
All say the same thing:
➡️ Lazarus Group did it
➡️ A North Korean state-backed hacking group
🏦 What About Bybit Users?
Bybit’s CEO Ben Zhou said:
The exchange is still solvent
Customer funds are safe
Assets are 1:1 backed
To stay stable, Bybit:
Got emergency loans from partners (including Binance)
Launched a bounty program
💰 Up to 10% reward for helping recover stolen funds
🧼 What Did Hackers Do With the Money?
In the first 48 hours, over $160 million was laundered
They used:
Crypto mixers
Decentralized exchanges (DEXs)
By late 2025:
Most stolen $ETH ETH was swapped into Bitcoin (BTC)
Funds were split into thousands of wallets
This made tracking much harder

Even “secure” systems can fail if:
People trust what looks normal
A single approval gives too much power

Changpeng Zhao (@CZ ) remains a co-founder but no longer holds an official executive role. Interestingly, he was pardoned by President Donald Trump in late 2024/early 2025 following his legal settlement with U.S. authorities.
