What is Midnight (NIGHT)?
Midnight is a Layer 1 blockchain that focuses on data protection through the use of zero-knowledge smart contracts. The network is designed to enable selective disclosure, allowing users to confirm specific information without exposing the underlying data.
The project operates as a privacy-oriented infrastructure that supports application development where sensitive information is required. It uses zero-knowledge proofs, specifically ZK-SNARKs, to validate data without revealing it on-chain. This approach keeps private data off the public ledger while still allowing transactions and conditions to be verified. Midnight is also positioned as a cross-chain privacy layer, enabling other blockchain networks to integrate privacy features without modifying their existing systems.
The NIGHT token is the native asset of the Midnight network. It is unshielded and remains publicly visible, distinguishing it from privacy coins. NIGHT is used for governance and utility within the ecosystem. It also enables the generation of DUST, a non-transferable resource used to pay transaction fees. This separation between the asset (NIGHT) and the resource (DUST) supports predictable fee structures and addresses compliance considerations while maintaining privacy in transactions.
Midnight was developed under Input Output Global (IOG). The project is led by Charles Hoskinson, who is also known for founding Cardano and co-founding Ethereum.
The total supply of NIGHT is 24 billion tokens, which also represents its maximum supply. The circulating supply is approximately 16.6 billion tokens.
