Gaara was born as a jinchūriki (host) of the one-tailed badger demon, Shukaku, who was sealed within him before birth to make him a powerful weapon for the village (his father's decision).
His mother died during childbirth due to the seal, but before dying, she imposed a curse/protection: sand automatically shielded him from any attack (even as a child, the sand instinctively saved him).
He has the kanji 愛 (Ai = Love) on his forehead, which ironically symbolizes his extreme loneliness.
As a child, he was feared and isolated by everyone in the village: they saw him as a monster, not a child. He suffered from chronic insomnia (Shukaku tormented him in his dreams), depression, and profound trauma.
His only emotional bond was with his uncle Yashamaru, but a traumatic event broke him, making him cold, ruthless, and obsessed with the idea that "love doesn't exist" and that the only thing that makes him feel "alive" is killing.
