23 March – Saint Turibius of Mogrovejo, Bishop

The defender of the indigenous in colonial Peru.

Born 1538 in Spain, lawyer and professor at Salamanca. Appointed Archbishop of Lima (Peru) in 1579 despite never having been to the Americas. Arrived to find a corrupt, exploitative Church hierarchy and brutal treatment of native peoples.

Visited every corner of his vast archdiocese (often on foot or mule), reformed clergy, built schools/hospitals, defended Indians' rights against Spanish authorities (including viceroys), catechized in Quechua and Aymara, held multiple synods to implement Trent. Known for tireless pastoral zeal, poverty, and justice. Died on a pastoral visitation 23 March 1606.

Patron of Peruvian bishops, native rights advocates, and those fighting injustice in the Church.

Violet vestments (Lent). In the midst of penance, Turibius reminds: true reform begins with justice, mercy, and going to the margins.

When power corrupts institutions or oppresses the weak, St. Turibius teaches: speak truth to authority, protect the vulnerable, evangelize with love.

St. Turibius of Mogrovejo, pray for bishops, missionaries in difficult lands, and all who defend human dignity.
